Building an AI-powered virtual eye (AIVE): roadmap, challenges, and opportunities

PURPOSE:
The eye, with rich imaging landscape and well-characterized anatomy, serves as an ideal organ for computational modeling. Traditional mechanistic approaches have advanced our understanding of ocular biomechanics, optics, and pharmacokinetics but remain limited in scale and data integration. Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI), imaging, and multi-omics enable a next generation "virtual eye", a high-fidelity multiscale digital twin. This work aims to synthesize current progress in computational and AI-based eye modeling and to outline a roadmap for developing an AI-powered virtual eye that unifies mechanistic and data-driven intelligence.
